Blackout vs. Room-Darkening Shades

Dark fabric is only part of a dark room.

Compare the fabric, the edges and the whole opening.

Ask what the seller means by “blackout” and “room darkening.” A fabric description is not a promise that an installed room will be completely dark. Review the complete system and the room’s other light sources.

Separate material from installation

The fabric

Compare the actual sample against daylight. Ask which opacity is specified, and whether the appearance changes between daytime and nighttime.

The opening

Review light at the sides, top and bottom. Ask how the mounting location and any proposed light-management accessories affect the result.

Give the salesperson a real target

Describe whether you want comfortable sleep, daytime rest, a darker television room or modest glare reduction. A person sleeping after a night shift may have a different expectation than someone softening an afternoon living room. Use a written outcome instead of agreeing on a label you interpret differently.

Check a sample in context

01 · Look at the window at the difficult time.

Note direct sun, street lighting or an early sunrise.

02 · Compare the selected fabric.

Ask for a sample of the actual color and opacity, not just the collection name.

03 · Review the mounting drawing.

Discuss coverage, hardware and any access the window still needs.

04 · Agree on the finished result.

Ask what light remains and what the supplier will do if it differs from the written proposal.

Norman options to investigate

Portrait Honeycomb and Soluna Roller are product families to discuss with a Norman supplier. Ask which fabrics and installation options address your goal; do not assume every fabric in a family provides the same privacy or light control.

Common questions

Does room darkening guarantee nighttime privacy?

Ask about the actual fabric and installed arrangement, and review it under the lighting conditions that matter.

Can outside mount help?

Discuss the available overlap and obstructions. The correct dimensions must come from the chosen product’s measuring instructions.

Should I add curtains too?

Compare a layered plan if you want it, including space, operation and cleaning. More layers are not automatically necessary.
