WINDOWS DIRECT UNIVERSITY GUIDE

Know what your window warranty actually promises.

A strong warranty is more than a long number of years. Learn who covers the product, who covers the installation, and how service works before you need it.

THREE PROMISES TO SEPARATE

01

Product warranty

The manufacturer’s written promise for covered product defects.

02

Installation warranty

The installer’s promise for labor, water management, and workmanship.

03

Service policy

How a concern is reported, inspected, scheduled, charged, and resolved.

START WITH RESPONSIBILITY

“Lifetime” does not tell you the whole story.

The useful questions are: whose lifetime, for which parts, under what conditions, and with what labor included? Read the actual written warranty—not only the headline in a sales presentation.

MANUFACTURER

Product and components

Look separately at frames, insulated glass, hardware, factory finishes, screens, and specialty options.

INSTALLER

Workmanship and opening

Ask who stands behind measuring, fastening, insulation, flashing, sealants, trim, and the surrounding wall.

HOMEOWNER

Care and documentation

Keep the contract, product labels, order information, photos, and maintenance instructions.

READ THE FINE DIFFERENCES

Coverage can change after the home changes hands.

Check whether coverage is limited to the original owner, transferable, reduced after transfer, or tied to an owner-occupied residence. Verify whether factory color, glass, hardware, and labor follow different timelines.

Ask before signing

  • Is the warranty full or limited?
  • Is coverage prorated over time?
  • Does it transfer when the home is sold?
  • Who pays labor, travel, shipping, and finishing?
  • What records are required?
  • Who is the first service call?

THE PRE-PURCHASE CHECKLIST

Put these answers beside every quote.

01

Coverage

Which product, glass, finish, hardware, screens, and accessories are covered?

02

Duration

How long does each part last, and does ownership change the term?

03

Remedy

Will the company repair, replace, refund, or choose the remedy?

04

Labor

Are diagnosis, removal, installation, finishing, travel, and disposal included?

05

Exclusions

Which conditions, alterations, maintenance failures, or events are excluded?

06

Process

Who receives the claim, what records are needed, and how is service scheduled?

Important: Product defects, installation problems, accidental damage, surface condensation, normal wear, and building movement may be treated differently. The written documents and facts control.

IF SERVICE IS NEEDED

Make the problem easy to understand.

Photograph the whole opening and close details. Record when the symptom appears. Save labels, order information, messages, names, and proposed resolutions together.

1. Photograph the window and the specific symptom.

2. Record the date and relevant weather conditions.

3. Gather labels, order number, and signed contract.

4. Follow the written service instructions promptly.

A REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

How AMSCO directs warranty service

AMSCO’s customer-facing page says the fastest route is generally the servicing dealer that sold the windows. If that dealer cannot be identified, AMSCO provides a service request path. Review the written limited warranty for the exact product, owner, component, exclusions, and claim procedure.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Warranty questions homeowners ask most

Does “limited lifetime” cover everything forever?

No. Duration, eligible owner, components, remedies, exclusions, and labor can vary.

Is installation labor covered by the manufacturer?

Not automatically. Ask the installer for separate written workmanship terms.

What should I save after installation?

Keep the contract, product schedule, invoices, warranty, care instructions, labels, order numbers, and photos.

Who should I call first for an AMSCO concern?

AMSCO directs homeowners first to the servicing dealer, with an AMSCO request path when the dealer is unknown.
