Replacing Windows in a Wood-Trimmed Home
Decide what wood is staying.
A scope guide for older frames, interior trim and replacement choices.
A wood-window replacement proposal should say which existing parts remain, which are removed and how the surrounding finishes will be restored. The visible trim and the underlying frame are different parts of the job.

Two replacement directions
Retain a suitable existing frame
An insert approach can preserve more surrounding finish when the existing frame is appropriate. Ask the installer to document its condition and the effect on visible glass.
Replace the complete window frame
Full-frame work changes more of the opening. Ask how interior trim, exterior details and concealed conditions will be addressed.
Walk the opening with the estimator
01 · Point out symptoms
Show sticking operation, stains, soft areas or recurring moisture. Ask what additional investigation is needed; appearance alone may not reveal the full condition.
02 · Separate repair from replacement
Identify whether frame repairs are included and how newly discovered damage is priced.
03 · Choose the interior finish
Record trim profile, stain or paint responsibility and whether matching existing wood is an expectation or an allowance.
04 · Review the final scope
Include removal, protection, installation, finish restoration and cleanup in writing.
Do not hide the hardest question
If the project’s main concern is deteriorated wood, ask how the chosen installation method addresses it. A new unit and attractive capping should not substitute for a documented plan for the existing opening. Product selection follows the condition assessment, rather than deciding it.
Useful handoff questions
Will the old trim be reused?
Only if the proposal says so and its condition permits. Ask what happens if it cannot be removed intact.
Can you match an old stain exactly?
Request a sample and an agreed acceptance process instead of assuming an exact match.
Which instructions govern the installation?
Use the actual window manufacturer’s instructions and the project’s applicable requirements.
