THE SHORT ANSWER
A sales description may focus on panes, coatings, gas fill, spacers, or frame material. Those ingredients matter, but the NFRC label helps compare the tested performance of the complete product configuration under standardized conditions.
ENERGY STAR qualification uses NFRC-certified ratings and varies by climate zone. A qualifying label is a useful screen—not proof that every qualified option will feel identical in every room.

How much solar heat the product allows through.
Lower SHGC reduces solar heat gain; higher SHGC admits more. The useful balance depends on climate, exposure, shade, season, and the room’s comfort problem.
How much visible daylight passes through.
Higher VT generally means more natural light. Tint, coatings, glass layers, screens, frame area, and the view can change how bright the room feels.
How much air passes through the rated product.
This is a product rating. It does not include air that may move between the installed frame and the wall, which is one reason installation still matters.
THE GLASS PACKAGE
The label shows performance. These components help create it. Their value depends on the exact product configuration, not the name alone.
Two or three panes create sealed spaces that can improve insulating performance. More panes also change weight, cost, glass appearance, and available configurations.
Low-E coatings manage radiant heat transfer. Different coatings and coated surfaces can produce different U-factor, SHGC, visible light, color, and exterior reflection.
Argon and other gases can improve the insulating performance of sealed spaces compared with ordinary air when the insulating-glass unit is designed and manufactured for them.
The system separating the panes influences edge-of-glass heat transfer, seal durability, and the temperature pattern near the perimeter.
DESIGN BY EXPOSURE

East-facing glass may create early glare and rapid morning warming. Room use and shade matter.
South-facing performance depends heavily on latitude, overhangs, winter goals, and summer shading.
West-facing rooms often receive intense late-day sun when outdoor temperatures are already high.
North-facing glass may prioritize insulation, daylight, and room-side surface temperature.
These are starting considerations, not universal prescriptions. Trees, neighboring buildings, mountains, rooflines, porches, interior shades, and local climate can change the pattern.
COMFORT IS MORE THAN A UTILITY BILL
People experience radiant temperature, drafts, direct sun, cold glass, hot glass, and uneven conditions. Energy models and labels are valuable, but homeowners often notice comfort first.
CONDENSATION WITHOUT THE CONFUSION
Fog or moisture trapped inside an insulating-glass unit commonly indicates seal failure. It is different from wipeable surface moisture.
Indoor humidity, glass surface temperature, airflow, shades, room use, and outdoor weather all influence condensation.
Exterior condensation can occur when the outside glass surface is cooler than humid outdoor air. It is not automatically a product failure.

FREQUENT QUESTIONS
Not always. It can improve U-factor and room-side surface temperatures, but cost, weight, product design, climate, exposure, comfort goals, and the rest of the home affect the value.
It can change visible light and appearance, but Low-E options vary. Compare visible transmittance, sample glass in useful light, and consider the exact coating and configuration.
That claim needs context. Savings depend on the existing windows, climate, home, energy prices, HVAC, installation, and occupant behavior. Comfort, operation, maintenance, and damage correction may be important benefits too.
No. U-factor is important, but SHGC, VT, air leakage, configuration, frame, installation, warranty, appearance, and the actual room goals also affect the decision.
